STRONG waves pounded the shoreline on the east coast of Florida as hurricane Irene moved northward. The waves at Cocoa Beach were forceful and the rip tides were fierce. A lifeguard had a jet ski on standby if it was needed. Water is one component of a hurricane the main ingredient is wind. Waves worked on eroding the shore as the wind drove grains of sand through the air that felt like a sandblaster when it hit the skin.
