GATES provide entrances and a form of security. This is a view of The City Gate in St. Augustine Florida. In 1808 if a person found themselves on the outside when the gates were closed at night they had to sleep outside the safety of the city.

I would hope that the guards at the gate were open to a little grease-palming

Wow, those are imposing gates! Guess you’d feel pretty safe if enclosed by them! Am sure it must’ve been a very scary time to be out at night.

I would sleep much sounder if I were inside the gates and not out.

More great framing- did I read right that the gates were made of palm logs?
Just who were they keeping out anyway ?

You read right. They were keeping the French out and who knows who else.
